These days, silver-mercury fillings (amalgam) have become much less popular. The reasons are simple. First, many people simply dislike the dark coloration associated with this filling material. Also, these fillings expand and contract when exposed to variations in temperature and heavy chewing forces. This allows gaps to form between the filling and the tooth. It is through these gaps that harmful bacteria invade the tooth, leading to dental decay, and in some cases periodontal disease. These gaps may also eventually cause large cracks and fractures to form, which may necessitate extensive treatment. Often the fractures are so severe that the tooth may require removal.
